【Buddha Locani Dharmalakṣaṇa Brief Introduction】

White Buddha Locani has three eyes and two arms adorned with bracelets. She wears a precious crown and is ornamented with gold earrings and pearl necklaces. Wearing a white celestial garment, she forms the Wisdom Fist Mudra and sits in the lotus position on a lotus platform.

Buddha Locani is the emanation of Vairocana Buddha and is also his homogeneous body.

Buddha Locani is one of principal deities worshipped in Vajrayana. Within the mandala of the Vajrayana Womb Realm she is one of the deities in the Pervasive Knowledge Court and the Shakya Court. We also address her as ”Buddha Eye, Honored Buddha Eye, Honored Buddha Mother, Buddha Mother Body, Mother of Buddha Eye Section, Buddha Eye Consort, The Eye of Void Consort, The Eye of Void Treasury Consort, All Tathagatas’ Buddha Eye Great Vajra Auspicious All Buddha Mother, etc..”

The background of this deity is from the Pervasive Knowledge Court and Shakya Court of the Womb Realm. What is ”Pervasive Knowledge Court?” Among the buddha names is ”One of Proper and Pervasive Knowledge” which means ”omniscient.” Namely, Locani is ”One of Proper and Pervasive Knowledge,” a Buddha. ”One of Proper and Pervasive Knowledge” is a Buddha. Locani is also a buddha because she is from the Pervasive Knowledge Court. Locani also appears in the Shakya Court, which is the main palace of Shakyamuni.

”Buddha Mother” means that all Buddha Mothers are endowed with transcendental wisdom. All sentient beings who accomplish buddhahood do so through Buddha Locani and Prajnaparamita. This is why Buddha Locani and Prajnaparamita are magnificent.

Countless eons ago, there were no hindrances whatsoever in the elements which, according to buddhism, compose the universe. The elements are unchanging and eternal because the virtue of sentient beings was perfect. Only light radiated throughout all the dharma realms, and the origin of this light was ”two eyes.” the Great Compassionate Universal Eyes. The Great Compassionate Universal Eyes transformed into All Tathagatas Buddha Eye Great Vajra Auspicious All Buddha Mother which is the transformation of the radiance of Vairocana into Buddha Locani.

Buddha Locani placed two Buddha eyes in the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss and they are the stately lotus ponds. Inside the ponds are orbs of light, and here there is infinite joy and happiness. These ponds are the Maha Twin Lotus Ponds. The Great Compassionate Universal Eyes are the essential element of the samadhi of the Maha Twin Lotus Ponds. They observe, respond to, and guide sentient beings. The light of these compassionate eyes shines everywhere throughout boundless infinity.

Vairocana says, ”This is the radiance of Vairocana’s eyes transformed into Buddha Locani and the two eyes of Buddha Locani then transforming into Maha Twin Lotus Ponds. The eighteen Padmakumaras are emanations of the orbs of pure light in the lotus ponds.”

Buddha Locani is our principal deity of wisdom. She is also the principal deity of wisdom of the True Buddha School. Vairocana – Locani – Amitabha – Padmakumara – Sheng-yen Lu is our wisdom lineage transmission from the void.

Buddha Locani originates from Vairocana’s ”Pure Dharma Realm Palace” Her two eyes transform into Maha Twin Lotus Ponds. Padmakumaras then emanate from Maha Twin Lotus Ponds. Padmakumara is my (Living Buddha Lian-sheng Sheng-yen Lu’s) former lifetime.

Living Buddha Lian-sheng is the embodiment of the ”White Robed Deity of the Eighteen Padmakumaras.” White Padmakumara is the embodiment of ”All Tathagatas Buddha Eye Great Vajra Auspicious All Buddha Mother,” whereas Buddha Locani is the transformation of the Buddhas of the Five Directions.

The mudra Locani Buddha forms is the Wisdom Fist Mudra of Vairocana. Therefore we can also form the Wisdom Fist Mudra when practicing the sadhana. One first forms the Vajra Mudra, then makes two circles with the thumbs and the index fingers to resemble the two eyes. This is the true mudra of Buddha Locani.
